| When I found out that a Catholic sister practices
what looked to me like zazen that they call
Christian meditation, I had to ask, "Why
did you get into this particular form of
prayer?" Perhaps the bluntness of the question arrested her thinking for a moment, but only a moment. She immediately began to purse her lips to say that "WELLLL!" which only elderly women headmasters who know precisely what they are doing say when they are about to tell a self-conceited young student to mind his own business. But what came out of her mouth was, "It made sense." It made sense--the tale of John Main's life story struck a chord in the heart of Sr. Mary Catherine. John Main was a seeker, and so was Sr. Mary Catherine. And John Main's introduction to this mantra prayer came through a Hindu monk, came from the East to the West. Sister was intrigued and found it helpful. But it is work--worth the effort. |
